What began as a class at the Evansville YWCA in 1971 has evolved into a recreational dance group, open to the community. We have been a presence in the Evansville area through the years at a variety of events: local arts festivals, international festivals, schools; camps, assisted living/nursing home facilities and Germania Maennerchor “Bierstube Bootcamp” to name a few.
Our music and dances are from 40+ countries around the world, with the majority of them from Israel and Eastern Europe (Armenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Czech/Slovakia…). Dances vary from simple village line dances, to couple dances, to challenging, energetic dances. Folk dances were often done to celebrate life events and they range from slow & melodic to fast and frenetic. Interesting languages, instruments, timing, figures, and stories all add to the experience. International Folk Dancing is about connection; connecting with the dancers beside you, the “folks” and cultures of the villages of origins, and the global community as a whole. Music, movement, exercise and social connection all wrapped in one activity.
We would love to have new members. We dance weekly on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 PM. (See Location tab for details) Please make contact prior to attending the first time (Contact tab), just in case we have had to cancel for some reason. We can also answer any questions you may have.
