The Republic of Serbia is a republic in south-eastern and central Europe, which is united with Montenegro in a loose commonwealth
known as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. The capital is in Belgrade. Serbia borders Hungary to the north; Romania
and Bulgaria to the east; the Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the south; and Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina
to the west.
The documented musical history of the people later known as Serbians can be traced back to the medieval era. At the time,
the region now known as Serbia was dominated by the Byzantine Empire, followed by being controlled by the Turks. Church music
was performed throughout Serbia by choirs or individual singers, led by a conductor. The songs performed at the time were
derived from the Osmoglasnik, a collection of religion songs dedicated to Jesus' resurrection. These songs were repeated over
the course of eight weeks in a cyclical fashion.
Aside from church music, the medieval era in Serbia included folk music, about which very little is known, and court music.

Ajde Jano, kolo da igramo,
ajde Jano, ajde duso, kolo da igramo.
Ajde Jano, konja da prodamo,
ajde Jano, ajde duso, konja da prodamo.
Ajde Jano, kuçu da prodamo,
ajde Jano, ajde duso, kuçu da prodamo.
Da prodamo, samo da igramo,
da prodamo, Jano duso, samo da igramo.
Come on, Jano, let's dance the kolo.
Come on, Jano, let's dance, dance the kolo.
Come on, Jano, let's sell the horse.
Come on, Jano, let's sell, let’s sell the horse.
Come on Jano, let's sell the house.
Come on Jano, let's sell, let’s sell the house.
We'll sell them just so we can dance.
We'll sell them just so we can dance.

Ide dika sa oranja
Bela Rada sa kopanja
Hey Rado, bela Rada,
Daj da ljubim lice mlado.
A boy going home from plowing
Fair Rada from working in the fields
Hey, Rada, fair Rada,
Let me kiss your young face.

Savila se bela loza vinova
Uz tarabu vinova.
Todor Todi podvalio
Triput curu poljubio
To ne bese bele loza vinova
Uz tarabu vinova
Vec to bese dvoje mili I dragi
Dvoje mili I dragi.
A pretty grapevine entwined itself
Along a fence, a grape vine.
Todor tricked Toda.
Kissed the girl three times.
It was not a pretty grapevine,
Along a fence, a grape vine.
It was, rather, two lovers,
Two lovers.

Oj lele stara planino,
po teb'sam cesto hodio,
po teb'sam cesto hodio,
s devojkam ovce cuvao.
Oh old mountain,
I have often wandered about you,
I have often wandered about you,
with the girls, tending sheep.

Dodi Mile u nas kraj
pa da vidis sta je raj.
Hej, haj, u nas kraj
pa da vidis sta je raj.
Prode, Mile, propeva
i volove protera.
Hej, haj, propeva
i volove protera.
Come, Mile, to our region
to see what paradise is like.
Hej, haj, to our region
to see what paradise is like.
Mile passes through and starts singing
as he drives his cattle.
Hej, haj, starts singing
as he drives his cattle.
