Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, is a country in southern Europe on the tip of the Balkan peninsula. It has land boundaries with Bulgaria, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the north, and with Turkey to the east. The waters of the Aegean Sea border Greece to the east, and those of the Ionian and Mediterranean Sea to the west and south. Regarded by many as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, Greece has a long and rich history during which its culture has proven especially influential in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Greek folk music includes a variety of styles played by ethnic Greeks in Greece, Cyprus, the United States and elsewhere.

I want to travel the waters of Attalia
And see the fishing boats rocking back and forth in the shallow waters
And the young sailors tying and untying the sails
And a young woman fluttering her handkerchief.

Chorus:
Drun drun drun drun drun

Ki'epese mes sto pigadi

K'etrekse o kosmos olos

Gerakina took off
to bring cold water.

Chorus:
Drun drun drun drun drun
Her bracelets jingle.

And she fell into the well
and she let out a loud scream.

And everybody ran
and poor me, I ran too.

Gerakina, I shall take you out
and I shall make you my wife.

Aide, one summer has passed
And you haven’t sent me any news.

Ai Gouna, ai Gouna,
my Karagouna, you deserve silken sigounia*.
Aide, what news shall I send you.
Aide, now that you have a new lover?

Indeed, how now, I saw purpose.
Indeed, how now, I saw you in the window.

Aide, I will sell. I will sell the flock of sheep.
Aide, to buy, to buy you a skirt.

Ai, Gouna, ai Gouna,
my Karagouna. You deserve silken sigounia.

Miserlou, your sweet glance,
has lit a flame in my heart.
Your lips trickle of honey.

Ah, Miserlou, magical, enchanting beauty!

Craze will come to me, I can endure no longer.
Akh! That I steal you from Arabia.

My Miserlou, crazy, black-eyed,
one of your kisses lights a flame in me.
One little kiss from your sweet mouth!

Ah, Miserlou, magical, enchanting beauty!

Craze will come to me, I can endure no longer.
Akh! That I steal you from Arabia.

Pote tha nixome pania

When will we set sail
so I can sit at the tiller,
So I can see the mountains of Leros
so that my pains will subside? A-ah, my little fishing boat come here
since I have something to tell you.

Bring the dawn, oh Eastern Sky
and shine your light on the world,
And welcome my little fishing boat that is approaching.

A-ah, the breeze is getting stronger
and the weather is not subsiding.
Oh North Wind stop blowing
and making foam on the waves,
And do not frighten my little fishing boat that is approaching.

A-ah, the breeze is getting stronger
and it will break the mast
O-oh…

Pull, pull, little carriage, pull
and at Kalamaki, cut off for a little ouzo.
What a world!

Pull, pull, pull to Glyfada
for good wine and barbounaki.
What a world!

Go back, towards Athens, go,
and listen to Yiannaki play bouzouki.
What a world!

I told you, mother
to marry me to someone,
to marry me to someone,
so that I would become a housewife.

But on no account
marry me to an old man,
marry me to an old man,
because you'll regret it.

Because an old man
is always examining everything,
is always examining everything,
and has nothing but words.
